Talked with Alice and Margaret at Centennial Visitor’s Center. They requested that I try to contact them via radio since they experienced communication problems with Hamann the day before..
Snow Pit analysis: Location: 13T 0396738, 4579918 UTM (near Brooklyn Lake) Elevation: 10,800 ft Aspect: se facing Slope angle: 20 degrees Air temperature: -1 C Time: 12:30 p.m. Layer 1 - 0 to 5 cm; stellar crystals, 1 to 2 mm; fist hardness. Layer 2 - 5 to 21 cm; dendrites to needles, 1 mm; fist hardness; temperature at 20 cm was –6 C. Layer 3 - 21 to 48 cm; angular sintered spheres, 0.5 to 1 mm; four finger hardness; temperature at 40 cm was –6 C. Layer 4 – 48 to 80 cm; angular sintered spheres, 0.25 to 0.5 mm; one finger hardness; temperature at 60 cm was –6 C. Layer 5 – 80 to 106; welded angular sintered spheres, 0.25 to 0.5 mm; pencil hardness; temperature at 80 cm was –4 C temperature at 100 cm was -3 C. Layer 6 – 106 to 155 cm; columnar hexagonal plates, 2 to 3 mm; fist hardness; temperature at 120 cm was –2 C. No Rutschblock was attempted due to consolidation of upper 106 cm of snow.Radio contacts with Centennial visitor’s Center were successfully made throughout the day with no difficulty.
