Attention to Customers running Email servers

1 June 2006

Note: This contains some necessary techspeak, sorry.

Begining 1 September 2006, TribCSP.com will begin blocking port 25 for all machines not registered as email servers.

This is due to the number of computers that have become infected by zombies or viruses that send SPAM email without the owner knowing about it.

Current practice requires ISP's to restrict this traffic and we feel that the time has come for us to do so.

This will only affect users that are trying to send email from the tribCSP network bypassing our email servers. If you have an SMTP account on another email machine you will need to use an alternate port. Authenticated mail submission has been on port 587 for some time and should work for almost all email systems. Port 587 requires authentication so please be sure that you have checked authentication in your email client.

If you run your own email server please register it with tribcsp.com so that SMTP is allowed from your server.
There are no charges involved.
To qualify for inclusion as an email server your machine must:

  • Have a static IP address
  • Not be an open SMTP relay
  • Reply to standard SMTP commands on port 25
  • We understand that this can cause some changes in the way some people are doing things but the zombie problem has gotten to a point that drastic measures are required. The majority of customers will be unaware of any changes.

To register your email server please send an email message to domains@tribcsp.com
Please be sure to include the IP address of the email server you want allowed to send outbound email.

This only applies to email servers housed within the tribcsp.com network. All other email server should be reached via alternate ports.

If you run an SMTP email server please register it ASAP to prevent any service disruption.
